Detect
terms and phrases that may be disrespectful, demeaning, or misleading.
EXAMPLE
“Hey, Jack, I hear your concern but what we’re doing was grandfathered in this year, so we don’t have to worry about the policy change.”

Suggest
terms and phrases that demonstrate respect, empathy, and understanding.
EXAMPLE
Instead of "grandfathered in", try these options:
- "exempt from the new rule"
- "exempted from the new rule"

Explain
why the original usage may be problematic, and why the suggestion is more inclusive, clear, or accurate, with sources.
EXAMPLE
The current usage of 'grandfathering in,' as in providing exemptions to long-time customers, should be re-considered to acknowlege the history of Black voter suppression that continues in the U.S. today.
